This position is with RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company—the second-largest U.S. tobacco company. The company's brands include Newport, Camel and Pall Mall.

This position will be in the Tobacco Heated Products (THP) group within the RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company, R&D organization.  The role will support the development and delivery products in full alignment to the Companies Next Generation Products (NGP) strategy.  This will involve development of the products, sub-components, materials and knowledge required to deliver superior sensorial performance and consumer acceptability coupled with acceptable analytical determinations. The role will support US specific and Global Product Development.  It will support from idea generation, through proof of concept, proof of application and into development and launch.


The focus of the role will be in the formulation and processing of tobacco-based materials for use within Tobacco Heated Products to deliver superior sensorial performance and consumer acceptability


The scientist must possess strong leadership skills, and with minimal guidance, manage intra and inter-departmental project teams to execute product development projects against aggressive timelines.  The individual must possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish collaborative relationships.  He/she must be capable of utilizing sound scientific principles to provide innovative solutions to complex problems.  Strong communication skills are required to interact effectively with peers, management and external vendors and BAT counterparts.


Principal Duties & Responsibilities Include:

  • Drive experiments to understand materials and technologies with regards to performance, chemistry & sensory and facilitate scale-up related activities up to and including the commercial level.
  • Generate new ideas for technology to use in Tobacco Heated Products, starting from bench top through proof of concept.
  • Design prototypes which meet market needs, interpret sensory and analytical test results using sound scientific principles.
  • Collaborate cross functionally with various groups to identify and investigate novel processes and ingredients to support substrate development, insure product/process scale up and commercialization.  Interact with outside vendors as necessary.
  • Insure internal business and regulatory process compliance in development, implementation of new/modified products, and maintenance of existing cigarette products.
  • Prepare data/information to support regulatory product submissions.
  • Prepare and publish results/reports as required.




Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering field and a minimum of three years’ experience in a consumer products industry.
  • Leadership and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to manage numerous, simultaneous complex projects.
  • Analytical and intuitive interpretation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and team work skills.
  • Highly effective written/oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software.


Strongly Preferred:

  • Advanced degree in a process or chemical engineering field
  • Formulation science experience in either tobacco, food or Pharma products, or another relevant category
  • Experience in design and development of processes for scale up and production of formulations
  • Understanding of process parameters and how they influence final product performance


The Ideal Candidate will possess:

  • Have some measure of relevant experience/expertise with products incorporating an electric heating device.
  • Ability to drive collaborative efforts cross-functionally and externally with outsourced vendors.
  • Ability to work and make decisions with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to develop and drive key strategies at the department level.
  • Excellent project management, time management and team collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills of dependability, reliability, and credibility.
