This position is with RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company—the second-largest U.S. tobacco company. The company's brands include Newport, Camel and Pall Mall.





This position will be responsible for coordinating and reporting analyses related to vapor products, also known as e-cigarettes.  In this role, the Sr. Scientist will work with many areas of the business to understand the needs of relevant stakeholders and  ensure the analytical needs of projects are executed. The Sr. Scientist will be expected to carry out many assignments independently to effectively complete tasks. 


This position will report to a Senior Manager in RJRT Analytical Support and work with others on this team to drive continuous improvement for the facilitation of analytical and stability testing, as well as, R&D and MFG support testing. 


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Lead assignments that have clear and specified objectives and require the investigation of a limited number of variables.  Assistance will be provided on unusual problems from senior technical staff and work will be reviewed for application of sound professional judgment.
  • Lead and/or coordinate the work of others.
  • Responsible for technical assignments as defined by business needs.
  • Utilize technical principles and theories, ingenuity, and creativity to assist, develop, and/or recommend solutions to complex problems.
  • Review, edit, comment and sign off on technical analytical documents.
  • Author protocols and reports, and ensure all relevant documentation is authorized and submitted accurately in line with company procedures.
  • Partner/collaborate closely with various stakeholder groups (e.g., Product Development, Product Integrity, Product Services, Scientific & Regulatory Affairs and Manufacturing Operations) to ensure that testing activities are completed to satisfy business’ needs. 
  • Evaluate, select, and apply techniques, procedures, and criteria using good judgment in making adaptations and modifications to achieve objectives.
  • Communicate regularly with their team and all other ancillary groups to ensure information is transferred effectively throughout the organization.
  • Identify and develop expertise in areas that can be utilized internally for development of processes for improved laboratory throughput.
  • Identify and partner with external suppliers, vendors, and analytical service providers to achieve objectives as needed.
  • Provide technical product support during the start-up and qualification of new equipment, processes, vendors, and suppliers.
  • Ensure that the Systems and Procedures are maintained to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in routine regulatory and internal inspections.
  • Handle any business related queries where necessary and liaise with their team to solve these queries if needed.
  • Drive continuous process improvement, through the ability to recognize unnecessary complexities and process gaps and proactively drive implementation of strategies to execute effective solutions.






  • Bachelor’s Degree in science (e.g., chemistry, physics, engineering) required but may consider other disciplines such as technical writing & communications, plus a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.

Relevant Experience and Highly Preferred Skills:


  • Experience in a regulated environment (FDA, MHRA, etc.).
  • Quality System experience with ISO, GMP, GLP.
  • Broad Analytical Chemistry expertise.
  • Proven knowledge of statistical methods for data reporting and analysis.
  • Lab instrumentation and Data acquisition software experience.
