RJRT R&D – Senior Manager – Smokeless Product Development

Position Description:

A primary responsibility of the Senior Manager – Smokeless Product Development will be to provide managerial and scientific support to facilitate development of a range of smokeless tobacco products. It is expected that research will encompass a broad range of applicability, including, but not limited to the tobacco product category, most specifically Next Generation Products with increasingly established harm-reduction potential.  Such products will range from modern variants of pouched products through completely dissolvable lozenge-type products. Products may include tobacco, tobacco extracts including pharmaceutical grade nicotine, as well as non-tobacco and non-nicotine designs. Research and development of oral tobacco products requires a strong fundamental science background, e.g. Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Food Science and the ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.  RAI is a leader in this category of products.

 

This position will report through Smokeless Product Development management and will manage a team and work cross functionally with other groups to drive continuous improvement in current products and in designing and developing new products. 

 

Accountabilities/Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The Senior Manager – Smokeless Product Development must exhibit strong project management and technical leadership skills. The incumbent should also have prior experience with management and talent development of others. The Senior Manager will be expected to oversee and drive the execution of multiple projects with changing priorities and aggressive timelines. He/she must be a self-starter, demonstrate competency in creative Discovery and Development and possess excellent communication skills as he/she must be able to work in a diverse, multi-functional project team to accomplish the goals. The incumbent will collaborate across numerous internal functions, as well as with external vendors, to deliver successful outcomes within specified timelines.
 

  • Manage a team with focus on providing fundamental scientific support to ensure that RAI and associated entities’ brands have a robust pipeline of break-through, consumer-centric products
  • Provide scientific support to advance development across multiple product formats (moist snuff, pouched products, pressed tablets, lozenges, gums)
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and support project teams to execute new solutions
  • Provide technical support for commercialization
  • Ability to engage with stakeholders and external partners
  • Responsible for the direct management and development of direct reports
  • Assists upper management with development of sub-functional and functional strategy
  • Responsible for identifying and utilizing emerging technologies, processes and/or science to deliver against the Company’s objectives
  • Direct R&D studies to generate research data/results, analyzes and interprets the research data/results required to meet the technical objectives 
  • Develop projects, determines technical objectives, makes recommendations for the selection of project staff and organizes the effort to meet technical objectives
  • Establish partnerships with various associations, academia, governmental agencies, technical and scientific consultants, etc.

 

Job Requirements:

 

Education: Master of Science (M.S.), or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)  in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Food Science, or equivalent experience.  B.S. degreed candidates with 6+ years relevant experience will be considered.

 

Required Skills:

  • Prior experience as a manager of others

Relevant Experience and Preferred Skills:

  • Prior experience in a consumer goods industry e.g. tobacco, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical strongly preferred but not required
  • Experience with some of the following: excipient formulation, component solubilization, component stabilization, delivery strategies, granulating, emulsions, suspensions, tablet formulation, gum formulation
  • Experience with oral dissolution studies, stability/shelf-life studies, microbial challenge studies
  • LCMS and GCMS
  • Familiarity with PK/PD data studies
