This position is within Reynolds American Services Company—a subsidiary that provides support services, including compliance, HR, law, finance, information management, and more to all of the subsidiaries of RAI.


This Master Scientist role will contribute to enterprise-wide regulatory strategies and advocacy efforts, particularly as they relate to regulatory clearance of provisional tobacco products by FDA. Through strong leadership and technical expertise, this role will contribute to Scientific & Regulatory Affairs by providing necessary direction and support to the development of regulatory submissions and associated amendments to support commercialized combusted and non-combusted cigarette products.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead key chemistry-related work streams critical to the development or defense of pre-market clearance applications (i.e., Substantial Equivalence submissions) under review by regulatory agencies (e.g., FDA)
  • Partner with Submissions & Engagement staff in the interpretation and evaluation of product-specific chemical analyses; explore and evaluate alternative approaches, as needed, to the presentation of analytical data in regulatory submissions
  • Develop, refine, and drive tactical plans in support of the strategic overall product-related regulatory strategy and objectives
  • Serve as primary technical writer, contribute scientific and regulatory expertise in leading the development and assembly of chemistry-related sections of regulatory submissions and associated amendments
  • Partner with R&D Product Services, R&D Product Development, and external resources to address and resolve product chemistry-related issues within regulatory submissions
  • Develop, refine, and ultimately drive tactical plans and regulatory-driven projects to support regulatory submissions and objectives
  • Utilize technical principles and theories, ingenuity, and creativity to develop and/or recommend solutions to complex problems; contribute to the development of necessary ad-hoc research strategies that support regulatory submissions
  • Partner with Sr. Director of Scientific & Regulatory Affairs in developing and refining strategic approaches to regulatory submissions, specifically focused on chemical analyses





  • Graduate degree (MS or Ph.D.) in chemistry (organic, inorganic, physical, analytical; materials, combustion, or theoretical chemistry also accepted) other disciplines (physics, engineering, or other technical discipline) will also be considered



  • Minimum 3 years of experience or 5 years of progressive relative experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more areas of tobacco-related science, with an emphasis on combusted tobacco products
  • Experience with analytical chemistry methodology and its strengths and limitations, analytical and product variability, experimental design, and statistical analysis, preferred
  • Basic understanding of the tobacco category

  • In-depth knowledge of cigarette design features (e.g., tobacco blends, materials) and their impact on cigarette smoke composition
