This position is with RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company—the second-largest U.S. tobacco company. The company's brands include Newport, Camel and Pall Mall.

The Health & Safety lead manager executes needed actions to ensure the company’s compliance with applicable local, state, and federal health and safety regulations. This position will support development, and implementation of Health and Safety policies,  procedures, initiatives and programs at RAI sites located in Winston Salem, NC. 


Principle Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Ensure site(s) maintain a continuous state of compliance with the company’s internal Health and Safety standards as well as applicable regulations by government agencies. (OSHA, NCDOL, etc.)
  • Work closely with manufacturing management and production associates
  • Participate in new product/process/chemical reviews for health & safety applicability determination, hazard analyses, PPE requirement, and training.
  • Assist in the development and deployment of the company’s Health and Safety programs and standards as they specifically apply to the sites.
  • Accountable for the execution of  Health and Safety programs, such as, but not limited to: Recordkeeping and Reporting, LOTO, HAZCOM, PPE, Industrial Vehicle Safety, Working at Heights, Walking and Working Surfaces, Confined Space, Asbestos, Laser and Radiation Safety.
  • Conduct periodic inspections of facilities and support plant personnel to implement controls to minimize safety and health hazards.
  • Conduct injury and near-miss investigations and root cause analysis to foster a zero-injury safety culture.
  • Develop and deliver health and safety training programs to ensure regulatory compliance and to increase proficiency in safe practices and promote safety consciousness.
  • Support safety committee teams by attending the meetings, reviewing inspection reports, providing member training, and proactively address safety concerns and suggestions
  • Inspect facilities to detect existing or potential safety and health hazards, and recommend corrective or preventative measures where indicated.
  • Identify and inform management of compliance issues, safety risks and improvement opportunities through the conduct of daily, weekly or monthly inspections and audits.
  • Work with site management for supplier safety management and compliance.
  • Supports the organization to foster a caring culture where Health and Safety are ingrained as a core value.
  • Identify and drive continuous improvement within Health and Safety programs to eliminate unnecessary complexities and drive overall efficiency while maintaining full compliance.
  • Assist with the management of the facilities’ Safety Data Sheet (SDS) management system and Medgate accident reporting system.
  • Develop periodic (monthly, quarterly) safety communications for various areas of the Company (safety committee handouts, newsletters, posters, etc.)
  • Support the shipping of hazardous materials while complying with DOT regulations
  • Coordinate and execute evacuation and internal assemblies for all locations
  • Provide site-specific environmental support that includes sustainability reporting, routine inspection, and data gathering etc.





  • A B.S. or advanced degree in safety, engineering, or a relevant discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in occupational safety, EHS, and regulatory compliance
  • Experience with manufacturing operations preferred
  • Experience with OSHA regulations specifically preferred
  • Computer skills, specifically the ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Outlook, SAP and ability to learn to use proprietary databases and other computer based applications.
  • Strong organizational skills, detail orientated and ability to meet deadlines with high degree of accuracy.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Must be able to work without direct supervision to accomplish goals and meet schedules, and work as a team leader/facilitator to address specific issues.
  • Possess strong problem-solving, critical thinking, reasoning, and decision-making skills.
  • Must have the ability to read and grasp EHS regulations, technical documents, and mathematical calculations.
  • Communicate effectively (verbal, listening, written) and work with various departments.
