This position is with RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company—the second-largest U.S. tobacco company. The company's brands include Newport, Camel and Pall Mall.

JOB TITLE: Director Environmental Health and Safety



This position provides strategic direction and leadership for RAI and its operating companies’ Environmental Health and Safety teams and initiatives. Primary responsibilities include:


  1. Provides strategic leadership of EHS initiatives to build upon RAI operating companies’ reputation as proactive corporate citizens;
  2. Ensures compliance with applicable government regulations and continuously explores ways to improve workplace safety and environmental performance beyond  compliance;
  3. Leads the environmental sustainability platform while setting direction for the program across RAI’s operating companies;
  4. Represents the company to external entities including government agencies to represent company interests in the development of environmental health and safety regulations.



  • Develop the overall EHS strategy to ensure EHS alignment with RAI’s corporate goals and objectives.
  • Establish global and site-specific EHS goals, targets, and objectives in partnership with
    operations/manufacturing leaders across RAI’s operating companies.
  • Provide strategic leadership and overall strategy of continuous improvement in safety and environmental performance.
  • Initiate policies, plans, and programs as necessary in the area of EHS management and EHS culture throughout the organization.
  • Direct third-party EHS audits and risk analyses for all locations to identify, correct, and abate recognized safety and environmental hazards, behaviors, non-compliant programs and procedures.
  • Act in liaison role with Commercial Integrity, drive strategic direction for RAI’s environmental sustainability program.
  • Coordinate and direct environmental and safety strategy and reporting to DJSI, Carbon Disclosure Project, GRI updates for RAI, and support CSR reporting.
  • Develop, monitor, and communicate metrics and scorecards for EHS performance across RAI’s operating companies and develop reporting platform for RAI Leadership.
  • Track, develop, and intervene to drive strategy on emerging and existing regulatory compliance programs.
  • Maintain and broaden relations with Business and Governmental agencies including NCMA/Chamber of Commerce and other business organizations of key EHS interest to RAI’s operating companies.
  • Develop and set strategy for environmental insurance/property transfers/donations across RAI’s operating companies.
  • Build and maintain centralized EHS staff’s technical and leadership competency.
  • Develop strategy regarding various third party certifications.





  • Associate Degree in Engineering or related field and 9+ years of relevant work experience;

or Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or related field and 7+ years of relevant work experience; or Post Graduate Degree in Engineering and 5+ years of relevant work experience.




  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in environmental, health and safety field or 12 years of relevant progressive experience in senior leadership position.
  • Experience interacting with regulatory agencies; experience in leading multifunction, multi-task team assignments from concept to implementation.
  • Project management experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of company operations, processes, staff and organization.
  • Experience serving on business advocacy boards/committees and professional organizations.
  • Experience in manufacturing areas and knowledge of OpCo Operations


Required Skills:


  • Strong oral and written communication and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Expertise to direct complex regulatory projects from initial approach to fully operational status.
  • Ability to maintain effective communications with all levels of the organization as well as with third parties.
  • Expertise in environmental and safety regulations.
  • Strong credibility and influence skills with regulatory agencies, business advocacy partners and leaders across operating companies.
  • Self-motivated, demonstrated leadership skills.


Preferred Skills:

  • Licensed Professional Engineer, Certified Safety Professional or Certified Industrial Hygienist.
