ABOUT THE POSITION

 

At RAI, the Research and Development (R&D) function bears primary responsibility for developing products, processes, and innovation tools fo the future for RAI's tobacco product operating companies. During your summer int he Global Smokeless Center of Excellence (CoE) Discovery internship, you will assist the group in research related to ingredient function, product development and bench scale investigations for support to the business.

 

As a Summer Intern, you will have Winston-Salem based assignments. The internship will provide challenging assignments and significant exposure to other company functions outside of R&D.  You will be exposed to both our domestic and global product development groups’ research, with the opportunity to work with scientists in the US and abroad. 


MAKE AN IMPACT THIS SUMMER:


The successful R&D Discovery Intern will perform research centered on the fundamental understanding of excipients, polymers and ingredients used in smokeless tobacco products.  Sensory, product performance, and stability are critical parameters for new-to-world products and understanding the tools available are crucial to successful product development.  A candidate who can apply scientific methodology to drive the development of the knowledgebase around ingredients will be successful in the assigned intern project.    

 

TO SUCCEED AS A RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT INTERN IN 2019 YOU SHOULD BE:
 

  • A student who has completed core coursework and research toward a Ph.D. in food science, material science or organic chemistry;
  • Proficient with MS Office desktop including advanced Excel skills;
  • A strategic, analytical and creative thinker;
  • A dynamic and innovative leader;
  • Strong in bench/laboratory skills with an eye towards application (pragmatic and practical transformation from bench to pilot scale);
  • An independent scientist who works well with a team;
  • Has excellent communication and presentation skills and the ability to work closely with cross-functional teams;
     

AND SOMEONE WHO:
 

  • Has superior verbal and written communication skills;
  • Possesses a high sense of urgency and strong work ethic;
  • Displays excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Is willing to relocate to Winston-Salem, NC for the summer.


BY THE END OF YOUR INTERNSHIP YOU WILL HAVE:
 

  • Spent time with c-suite leadership during a series of leadership roundtable events
  • Gained insight into what it’s like to work here, global development opportunities and career pathways
  • Worked directly with experienced Research and Development professionals on a challenging and meaningful project
  • Presented your findings and recommendations to the Research and Development Function including the Leadership Team and key personnel.
